Your data, plainly explained
Privacy Policy
AFRO is built around open climbing knowledge and private personal choices. This policy explains what stays on your device, what reaches AFRO’s services, and what you can control.
Effective 29 July 2026
Information we handle
Account and authentication
We handle your email address, display name, account identifiers, session details, and basic Google profile information when you choose Google sign-in.
Guide and community contributions
We store the boulders, problems, grades, photos, topo lines, access notes, comments, and other guide material you deliberately contribute, together with approval, provenance, attribution, and versioned AFRO Commons Agreement metadata.
App, device, and location data
AFRO may process app version, device or browser details, feature usage, network and sync state, and error or exception events. Location is used only when you grant permission for map, navigation, capture, or nearby-discovery features.
Support and communications
If you support AFRO, we handle the amount, currency, cadence, payment and subscription status, provider references, refunds, disputes, timestamps, and transactional-email delivery state needed to operate and support that payment.
How we use information
- Provide accounts, maps, offline guide data, logbooks, capture, and moderation.
- Sync owner-private and public data according to their separate visibility choices.
- Keep the service secure, prevent abuse, and diagnose reliability problems.
- Process support payments, renewals, cancellations, refunds, and disputes.
- Send service, security, support, and payment-related communications.
- Maintain accounting records and meet legal obligations.
We do not sell personal information and do not use PostHog data for advertising.
Private logbook and BetaSnake
Your private ascent diary, notes, guest or partner labels, height, wingspan, measurement snapshots, and optional gender identity are stored in an encrypted private logbook on your device. They are not Commons contributions merely because they are stored or synced.
If you confirm you are 18 or older and enable a BetaSnake choice, AFRO may privately sync the current height, wingspan, measurement date, and versioned consent needed for private matching and/or thresholded anonymous group statistics. Gender identity stays on your device in BetaSnake V1. Exact measurements, private notes, guest entries, and user identifiers are not public or sent to an LLM.
You can change personalisation and aggregate-contribution choices independently and use the app’s dedicated control to erase body data while keeping ascent records.
Public ascents and beta videos
Beta climbing videos and featured climber measurements
A self ascent becomes public only after a separate, explicit sharing choice. The public view contains a display-name snapshot, the problem, ascent date, publication time, and minimal Commons licence information—not private notes, body data, ratings, or consent evidence.
For curated beta videos, AFRO may link an identifiable Instagram or YouTube video to a problem and publish the featured climber's exact height and wingspan only after direct or written publication consent. Version 1 excludes climbers under 18 while there is no guardian-consent flow. A featured climber can ask us to withdraw consent; we will hide the public video and measurements while a private consent and moderation audit record may be retained.
The video remains with Instagram or YouTube. Following the link sends you to that provider, which handles information under its own privacy practices.
Support payments
AFRO is a Pixel Poetry project operated by Marc Duby. Support is voluntary, unlocks no app benefit, and is not represented as a tax-deductible charitable donation.
Stripe collects and processes payment-method and billing details under Stripe’s own privacy practices. AFRO does not receive or store your full card number. AFRO receives the limited customer, payment, subscription, refund, and dispute information needed to operate the support feature and show My contributions.
Resend delivers payment confirmations, renewal and failure notices, cancellation updates, refund notices, and payment-support messages to your confirmed AFRO account email. Access to production payment records and operational alerts is limited to authorised operators.
Read the Refunds & cancellation policy for the support process.
Retention and deletion
We retain information while your account is active and as needed to provide AFRO, resolve support or security issues, and meet legal or operational requirements.
Account deletion removes the account and private account data subject to those requirements. Community climbing contributions may remain in the guide with their recorded Commons licence, provenance, and attribution history; the public profile link can be removed or anonymised where appropriate.
Payment records needed for refunds, disputes, fraud prevention, tax, accounting, or legal compliance may be retained after account deletion. Cancel future recurring support before deleting the account so that subscription management remains available.
Your choices
- Update account and display information in Profile.
- Control location access through your device or browser settings.
- Choose separately whether to publish an ascent or contribute community feedback.
- Change BetaSnake personalisation and aggregate-contribution choices independently.
- Erase body data without deleting your ascent history.
- Cancel recurring support from My contributions through Stripe’s Customer Portal.
- Request access, correction, or deletion by contacting us.
Security and age boundaries
AFRO uses reasonable technical and organisational safeguards, including owner-scoped server access and encrypted private mobile storage. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
AFRO is not directed to children under 13. BetaSnake body-data participation currently requires an 18+ confirmation, and the first featured-climber video flow excludes climbers under 18.
